Chapter 18

“I would say that went as well as it could have,” Piers said, smiling to Alyx.

“Agreed.” Alyx smiled back, satisfied. The two stood outside Police Headquarters, watching the other policemen take Beck inside. “Kind of wish we had gotten the first guy for a second time. Or if we had gotten the drug kingpin. Captain Stone won’t be happy that we didn’t bring him in.”

“Well, the man has a lot of firepower. And as I told you, I think he could be an asset.” Piers continued looking ahead. Yes, Heath will see things my way. I’ll be sure of that.

“You might be right. Who’s that?” Alyx pointed to a man walking toward them from the headquarters.

“Well, I do believe that looks like Keats,” Piers answered in a mocking tone. He straightened his posture, looking smug and confident.

Keats walked up to the pair. He looked dead-pan at them, serious. I’m not in the mood for another lecture. Not going to let him ruin this day for me.

“I thought you two might be out here. I passed guards escorting that tall Furrows boy inside.”

“The mission was a success,” Piers said. “No thanks to you.”

Keats stared back, his look cold. “I told you I wasn’t going to be a part of you breaking your probation.”

“And I told you I simply couldn’t miss seeing the look in that poor asshole’s eyes when we slapped handcuffs on him. Best part was Jaym basically watched me do it. Plus, getting to gun down a few of his pals was an added bonus.” Piers’s blood was boiling. Who does Keats think he is? So holier-than-thou these days.

“How did you even know he was going to be there?” Keats was still unconvinced.

“Come on Keats,” Alyx answered. “You know we’ve been tracking all recent criminals after their release from the Tribunals. We knew there was a high chance Jaym would be there. And those two seem to run together.”

Keats looked from Alyx to Piers. He was clearly still angry, almost distrustful.

“Anyways, I better be going. Captain Stone will want a full report,” Alyx said. “See you both later.” Alyx and Piers shook hands, and then he headed off toward the headquarters.

Turning to Keats, Piers said, “I don’t appreciate you chastising me.”

Keats looked back, his look becoming graver. “I’m just nervous for you. If Captain Stone finds out you went on this raid, or worse, your father…”

“They won’t.” Piers spoke pointedly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the golden globe that the two boys had stolen from his father’s office. “Look what I found.”

Keats eyed the sphere apprehensively. “Piers. Don’t go and do something stupid. Gloating to your father isn’t going to help anything.”

“I know what I’m doing. I’ve thought through everything. So, don’t you worry.” Piers slipped the globe back into his pocket. “I’d better get going.”

Keats nodded. In a grave, grim tone he said, “You’re walking a fine line, Piers. Tensions are running high in this city. Making enemies isn’t going to help calm things down.
